I mean, all of her books are on my wishlist, so it's truly amazing how long it's actually taken me to get to her work. I jumped at the chance to review this one when the opportunity rose and I have no regrets. I didn't really know that Crossan writes (most of) her books in verse, so this was a delightful surprise. It's been absolute ages since I've read a book in verse––the last probably being an Ellen Hopkins novel––and this was also a first for me: I haven't read a book that primarily centers around the criminal justice system and capital punishment before.
<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Upon realising that this was a novel in verse, I knew that this book was going to be harrowing and emotional. Why don't we have any happy books in verse (cue recommendations for happy verse books please!!)?! Anyway, nothing hits me harder than a difficult topic written in a way that portrays characters emotions and the gravity of the situation in a few but still deeply impacting words. You would expect not be able to get a handle on the characters in this book, but you'd be surprised at how much you can relate to and understand our protagonist Joe. I enjoyed the flashbacks and present day scenes intertwined––it allowed me to truly appreciate the past and see his complicated (and sweet) relationship with Ed, as well as with the rest of the characters.
<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Quick, brutally raw, and filled with feeling, Moonrise moved me to my core. Sarah Crossan masterfully navigates a difficult topic through beautiful verse, and I'm desperate to read more from her.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When eighteen-year-old Becky Randle’s mother dies, she’s summoned from her Missouri trailer park to meet Tom Kelly, the world’s top designer. He makes her an impossible offer: He’ll create three dresses to transform Becky from a nothing special girl into the most beautiful woman who ever lived.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Becky thinks Tom is a lunatic, or that he’s producing a hidden camera show called World’s Most Gullible Poor People. But she accepts, and she’s remade as Rebecca. When Becky looks in the mirror, she sees herself – an awkward mess of split ends and cankles. But when anyone else looks at Becky, they see pure five-alarm hotness.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #ea9999; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Soon Rebecca is on the cover of Vogue, the new Hollywood darling, and dating celebrities. Then Becky meets Prince Gregory, heir to the British throne, and everything starts to crumble. Because Rebecca aside, Becky loves him. But to love her back, Gregory would have to look past the blinding Rebecca to see the real girl inside. And Becky knows there’s not enough magic in the world.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I remember getting a signed copy of this one at ALA in 2013, and here we are now–after years of Gorgeous lying on my shelf, I finally caved and cracked it open. With praise by Meg Cabot and David Sedaris on the front and back cover topped with an interesting premise, I had high hopes despite not knowing what exactly was in store. Sadly, Paul Rudnick's YA debut wasn't a hit for me. There were funny moments, sure, and the ridiculously over-the-top situations that our protagonist finds herself in are oozing in originality, but it fell flat for me. I also wasn't sure whether it was supposed to be a major commentary on something, like it was playing the satirical YA novel that pokes fun at popular culture, because I was definitely getting that, but I wasn't sure if that was the point (other than the inner beauty always beats outer beauty message); even if so, there were a few problems for me here and there that overshadowed the more humorous moments.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The characters–were we supposed to not like them? Becky was alright, but even so I wasn't rooting for her character a lot of the time. Prince Gregory was...passable. Rocher thankfully provided a lot of the funny in this novel, but even then there were times when I abhorred her. However, she was one of the characters I could truly grasp because otherwise the novel just seemed to bounce from place to place without really landing anywhere or going too much in depth character-wise by going unnecessarily in depth with random other things.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">And the plot...what was happening? I probably could just give you the bare bones of the story, and even now while I'm typing out this review I'm questioning what I just read. There's a major supernatural element to the story, but it felt out of place? I'm just a little more than confused with the three dresses, the conditions she gets to wear them under, the reason for concealing the major "plot-twist," which, by the way, was super easy to guess and left me wondering why that was left until the end. Speaking of which–the end? Um, what? I'm not talking about the epilogue, but all the stuff that happens before. I kind of wish that I had put down the book earlier in order to avoid disappointment (as I had been contemplating several times while I was reading Gorgeous).

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A let down, Paul Rudnick's Gorgeous just wasn't quite there. A real shame, because I so desperately wanted to love the story at multiple points–the potential for humour was so close, but didn't make it in the end for me. With a supernatural plot that takes part in the fashion world that ends up becoming involved with the British Royal Family...there was both too much thrown in and too little with regards to the characters going on in this book. Sad that it didn't work out, but I'm hoping if I do read another one of Rudnick's YA books that I'll find them better than I did this one!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Sasha Stone knows her place—first-chair clarinet, top of her class, and at the side of her oxford-wearing boyfriend. She’s worked her entire life to ensure that her path to Oberlin Conservatory as a star musician is perfectly paved.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">But suddenly there’s a fork in the road, in the shape of Isaac Harver. Her body shifts toward him when he walks by, her skin misses his touch even though she’s never known it, and she relishes the smell of him—smoke, beer, and trouble—all the things she’s avoided to get where she is. Even worse, every time he’s near Sasha, her heart stops, literally. Why does he know her so well—too well—and she doesn’t know him at all?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Sasha discovers that her by-the-book life began by ending another’s: the twin sister she absorbed in the womb. But that doesn’t explain the gaps of missing time in her practice schedule or the memories she has of things she certainly never did with Isaac. As Sasha loses her much-cherished control, her life—and heart—become more entangled with Isaac. Armed with the knowledge that her heart might not be hers alone, Sasha must decide what she’s willing to do—and who she’s willing to hurt—to take it back.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So begins a series of texts and emails sent between two best friends, Ava and Gen, as they head off to their first semesters of college on opposite sides of the country. From first loves to weird roommates, heartbreak, self-discovery, coming out and mental health, the two best friends will document every moment to each other. But as each changes and grows into her new life, will their friendship be able to survive the distance?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I wanted to read this one for several reasons. The first was the cute cover. I'm a sucker for simple, adorable covers, so check! this one fit the bill. Second reason? The title. It definitely piqued my interest, so I had to check out what it was about, which leads to my third reason: the little excerpt in the blurb. I LOVE the epistolary format–primarily because it's super easy and quick to read, but also it's a nice break from the usual prose. So yeah, I knew that I couldn't be disappointed by this one. And I'm glad I wasn't! I also only found out that two of my fave (former) Buzzfeed peeps wrote this book when I got a hardcover in the mail and saw the author picture (cue my jaw dropping). I haven't actually watched their YouTube channel, but I'm sure it's as great as they were when they were on Buzzfeed's videos.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I'm pretty sure that the two characters in this book are based off of the two authors because from what videos I have seen of the both of them, Ava and Gen's characters are parallels to real-life Gaby and Allison (also sneaky sneaky with having characters with the same letters!). I really appreciated how different the two girls were–one was definitely a lot more outgoing while the other struggled a little more to fit in. You could totally see how the collaboration between these two authors worked, and I was super into it. It was also a bit of an interesting situation, as both of these girls just finished high school and are off to college! Normally at this point the book would be labelled NA, because it borders on more mature topics at university-settings, but this had a very YA-feel to it, so I'm one happy reader at this point, because I got to read about girls dealing with the same stuff as I did without feeling like I was crossing over into New Adult territory, which I normally stay away from (nothing against the category...it just isn't for me!).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The format, as I mentioned before, was pretty easy to read, because it mirrors our way of communicating with others today. Even though I rarely use email to talk to my friends, I appreciated the variation in format within the emails–we got some "articles" from Gen and "scenes" from Ava–as well as the IMs. It was really cute and moving to see these two characters deal with their struggles while also trying to keep in touch when they're both on different sides of the country. What my only problem is that we didn't get much of **minor spoiler** the events that happens when Ava goes to Boston for Thanksgiving, which was a bit difficult to piece together in the aftermath.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I clearly need to try more books by YouTubers because I Hate Everyone But You was so charming! I loved Dunn and Raskin's voices in their debut novel, and I sure as hell hope they write another one together because I enjoyed this collaboration. Refreshing, funny and full of pop culture references, I devoured this book in one go and was left wanting more.

Allison Raskin & Gaby Dunn are two best friends who live in Los Angeles. They started the comedy YouTube channel Just Between Us in 2014 and have since then spent far too much time together. Gaby’s journalism has appeared in pretty much every major publication and Allison has written some really funny group texts with her family. <span style="color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Everyone Juliette has ever cared about could be dead. Juliette may be the only one standing in The Reestablishment's way. But to take them down, Juliette will need the help of the one person she never thought she could trust: Warner. And as they work together to defeat their mutual enemy, Juliette will discover that everything she thought she knew–about Warner, her abilities, and even Adam–was wrong.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Oh my goodness–it has taken SEVERAL years but I'm finally at this point! I FINISHED THE SHATTER ME TRILOGY!! Never mind that there are three more books to come...I actually finished the original three after years of putting it off! My track record for actually finishing series is terrible and this is an accomplishment in my eyes, so I'm gonna pat myself on the back for this one. Anyway. It all comes down to this: Ignite Me. From first really loving this book a few years ago, to re-reading it recently and not enjoying it as much, to loving the novella from Warner's POV, to enjoying the second instalment, to kind of switching sides in Adam's POV, it all comes down to this. While I did appreciate some of the awesome changes that this book presented, there were a few things I didn't quite enjoy. It's kind of like the Mockingjay of the series–I was left wanting more because I wasn't completely satisfied (which kinda works out seeing how there are going to be more books).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">First of all, I liked Juliette the best in this book. She FINALLY grew a backbone, became much more grounded, and actually kicked-ass. She quit her whining, guys! And I'm gonna tell you–it made reading this book sooooo much easier. And then of course, what good is Juliette with all the boy drama? Team Adam and Team Warner...it all plays out here. There's a pretty clear ending for this love triangle that has gone back and forth in the previous books in the series, but I'm gonna scream if book four reintroduces it. Also–Team Kenji ftw, because Kenji is still the best character, in my opinion.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Okay, what I didn't really enjoy about this one was that it was kind of convenient. Like it was convenient that things started to fall into place, and it was convenient that problems were solved pretty quickly. Obviously it isn't the end of the story, but the last third or quarter of the book was just super (one last time!) convenient. I wanted a little more push-back or more problems to arise, but instead of action all I got was drama revolving around the romance. I love romance, but in a dystopian book about taking down the new order you KNOW I want my fair share of battle and action alongside steamy scenes.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I can't be totally disappointed with this book because there's another one coming out! If Ignite Me had been the last book of the series I wouldn't have minded either because it does seem to tie up somewhat nicely, but oh well–looks like further problems will arise because all is not what is seems (apparently). Overall I've been pretty into this series and am curious to see where it goes. Ignite Me may have not been my favourite, but it was still pretty damn good.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">DAVID: In the 622 days I’ve attended Mapleview High, Kit Lowell is the first person to sit at my lunch table. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When an unlikely friendship is sparked between relatively popular Kit Lowell and socially isolated David Drucker, everyone is surprised, most of all Kit and David. Kit appreciates David’s blunt honesty—in fact, she finds it bizarrely refreshing. David welcomes Kit’s attention and her inquisitive nature. When she asks for his help figuring out the how and why of her dad’s tragic car accident, David is all in. But neither of them can predict what they’ll find. Can their friendship survive the truth?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">After I found out about the existence of What to Say Next I HAD to get my hands on it and read it. I absolutely adored Tell Me Three Things (read my review)–it was one of my favourite reads last year. Well, I can't believe it, but this one actually managed to top it! Julie Buxbaum is officially on my I-don't-care-what-it's-about-but-I'm-going-to-read-it-no-matter-what list. What to Say Next was BEAUTIFUL. While I don't think that there was much in terms of plot, as the actual storyline wasn't as eventful as her debut YA novel, this one was soooooo good.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">You guys, there was so much diversity in this one! It's kind of sad that when books actually have diverse characters we end of celebrating the fact, because it isn't the norm. Anyway, I loved the fact that the author actually did an amazing job of nailing the facts down, too (Indian girl over here who has been disappointed by wrong facts in YA novels!). Kit was such an amazing character–you could really feel how real her grief was and how real her character was. David of course puts her on a pedestal, but the alternating perspectives allows us to see that there is a more vulnerable, imperfect side to her. Speaking of, I LOVED DAVID. Yay for representation of a character with a disability, but also, gosh darn it: I loved this kid. I'm a sucker for the popular-girl-notices-unpopular-boy trope, and I was (sorry for the use of this word but) shipping this the whole way through. He has no filter, and reading his thoughts and observations was fascinating–not to mention, he was also full of surprises. Miney was a great character as well, and I'd love to read a spin-off book of her life at college...or even her years at high school. Doesn't matter because she kicks ass and is the supportive, wonderful sister that everyone should have. So, hooray! for awesome families in general because David's family was the ultimate squad goals, and, while Kit's mom had flaws, she felt so real, too. I'm glad to say that I enjoyed Violet and Annie's characters. They may seem like the typical best friends to the popular girl that's found so often in YA, as in that even though Kit was super nice they were the super mean friends, but they actually backed her up most of the way through, and THAT'S what healthy friendship looks like, folks.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">As for the actual events of the book, there were several hilarious moments and some sad ones sprinkled among them. When I said that there wasn't too much going on in terms of the book's storyline before, I meant that there wasn't really major twists or events like there were in Tell Me Three Things. Tell Me Three Things had the email exchange and the mystery of who sends them while the main character basically has two boys interested in her. This one was not as mystery-charged, but emotionally there is a lot that is explored. There's a twist close to the end, that has to do with the tragic event that took place before the book begins. While it was kind of a surprise, it wasn't a huge shock for a reveal, so that was nice.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">While this book does deal with grief and sad topics, it had such a cute romance. I loved What to Say Next, and without a doubt it's one of my favourites this year. I was genuinely bummed to see it end because I wanted MORE. Julie Buxbaum is a captivating storyteller with her lovable characters, hilarious and witty dialogue, as well as more than a fair share of touching moments. Her books are now an automatic must-read, and I'm definitely looking forward to what's coming next.<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Lottie Reaves is not a risk taker. She plays it safe and avoids all the ways she might get hurt. But when her beloved aunt Helen dies of cancer, Lottie’s fears about life and death start spiraling out of control.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Aunt Helen wasn’t a typical aunt. She was the author of the bestselling Alvin Hatter series, about siblings who discover the elixir of immortality. Her writing inspired a generation of readers. She knew how magical writing could be, and that words have the power to make you see things differently.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In her will, Aunt Helen leaves one writing project just for Lottie. It’s a series of letters, each containing mysterious instructions that are supposed to get Lottie to take a leap and—for once in her life—really live. But when the letters reveal an extraordinary secret about the inspiration for the Alvin Hatter series, Lottie finds herself faced with an impossible choice—one that will force her to confront her greatest fears once and for all.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Everything All at Once was a contemporary that I was desperate to read–it popped up everywhere on my book social media, and there was no escaping it. I mean, I love books where there's a list of things to do after someone's gone, because it allows for self-discovery, as well as secrets to surface. Finally I decided to just go ahead and read it (skipping a lot of my TBR pile to do so as well!), and I'm glad that I enjoyed it. I liked The Half Life of Molly Pierce (read my review), and while this one is a bit more lighthearted in comparison to Leno's debut, it still carried similarly serious undertones.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It's always interesting seeing books within books. Our protagonist Lottie's aunt is a famous author, and before every chapter we see little snippets of the Alvin Hatter series along with multiple references to the series and its characters. It kind of makes me want some spin-off series that consists of Alvin Hatter books just to know what everyone refers to during the book! Also side note: for some reason whenever I think of Alvin I think of Alvin and the Chipmunks, so both Alvin and Margo were chipmunks in my head... (yeah I don't know what's wrong with me either).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">What I liked that this book explored was mental illness. I obviously don't know what some people go through on a daily basis, so books like this one are so important to that understanding. Lottie's anxieties about life and death after the death of her aunt get much worse, so delving into something this close and personal was a pretty eye-opening experience. I really enjoyed her character too–she felt fresh and real, well-rounded and fleshed-out. The other characters were also a delight: her parents, her brother, her friends...and then there's Sam.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Okay, so things are going to get a bit **SPOILERY**, so just a warning ahead of time. It's not a major spoiler I'm about to drop but it kind of hints to the big reveal so I would avoid reading this paragraph. You not looking? CAUSE I'M ABOUT TO DROP THIS NOW (highlight to read): I didn't enjoy the magical aspect of this book. I mean, it was set up so well for a contemporary, and then there comes magical realism to tie it all up, and while it could have worked if it was present from the start, I think putting it in pretty late in the game just didn't work for me.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Other than my feelings about a particular part of the book, Everything All at Once was a poignant and moving story about life, death, and everything in between. I thoroughly enjoy and devour Katrina Leno's stories, so this is one I would most definitely recommend, and I look forward to reading more.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">As Omega Point prepares to launch an all-out assault on The Reestablishment soldiers stationed in Sector 45, Adam's focus couldn't be further from the upcoming battle. He's reeling from his breakup with Juliette, scared for his best friend's life, and as concerned as ever for his brother James's safety. And just as Adam begins to wonder if this life is really for him, the alarms sound. It's time for war.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">On the battlefield, it seems like the odds are in their favor—but taking down Warner, Adam's newly discovered half brother, won't be that easy. The Reestablishment can't tolerate a rebellion, and they'll do anything to crush the resistance . . . including killing everyone Adam has ever cared about.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Okay, so since Unravel Me I'm heading towards the direction of Team Warner, but I'm glad Fracture Me was written from Adam's perspective because it definitely allowed some Adam appreciation from me! I'm sad that this love triangle is changing a ton, because in Shatter Me is pretty obvious who Juliette should end up with, but the novella and book that came after complicates things–both for Juliette, and for me because DAMN...I don't know who to side with now!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A lot of the events that took place in Unravel Me appear in this book told from Adam's perspective. While it's all stuff that we know, it's kinda cool to see how his character perceived things, especially since he didn't know a lot of the info that Juliette was hiding from him in the second book in the series. **SPOILER** What we also get is the story of what happens after Juliette is captured, and how everyone seems to think she's dead, as well as what they plan to do next.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I know I had some mixed feelings about this series to begin with, but now? Now I'm so excited to see how it ends. I'm captivated by Mafi's debut series, and I need to know how it all ends. I can't wait to pick up Ignite Me!

A volcano, quiet for centuries, rumbles just beneath the earth's surface. And the woman with the Tiger's heart is on the prowl . . .

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Before reading The Girl Who Drank the Moon, I'd heard a lot about it. I'd seen that it won the Newbery Medal a while back, so when the opportunity to read and review it arose, I took that chance. There's something about diving into classic-esque middle grade fantasy books. They really take me back to my childhood, because I absolutely adored the fantasy genre growing up and couldn't get enough of places like Narnia or Lyra's Oxford. Anyway, I knew that there was no way that this could disappoint, and I'm so glad that it didn't. The Girl Who Drank the Moon was a magical, multi-layered story that I couldn't get enough of.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I say multi-layered, because there are several stories going on at once, with jumps in time, setting and so if you're unaccustomed to stories that swing from place to place, this could get a little confusing. I was a little perplexed to begin with, with the interjecting characters of a one-sided conversation that doesn't really make any sense until the end, as well as with the random characters that eventually turn out to be not-so-random. Initially, even though they were pretty interesting, I was wondering what the point of including them in the story was. As it turns out, everything is connected and the level of detail that the author attributes to interweaving the various characters and their stories is stunning.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I loved the misconceptions and mishaps between the different character groups! Obviously the fact that the people of Protecotorate thought that there was a witch that demanded babies so that they'd have to turn over they're youngest children was horrifying, but the fact that Xan was actually a lovely, grandmotherly witch made this story so much more intriguing. Then we have a wonderful duo that comes with her–the poetic and philosophical Glerk, and the hilarious Fyrian. Fyrian is the small talkative dragon friend I wish I had! I truly enjoyed his random observations and singing moments–it was a lovely ice-breaker at times when the book got a little dark. Luna, our main character, of course sounded like a tiresome (but adorable) child when she was younger, but I loved her growth and discovery that came along with it. There are so many people in here that keeping track of everyone, as I mentioned before, will be a bit tricky, but trust me–it all comes together in the end.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The writing is absolutely GORGEOUS. I was sucked into this world almost immediately, and navigating the landscape through the perspective of various characters gave it that extra sparkle. There are creatures and various kinds of magic in here that I never could have imagined. Barnhill's The Girl Who Drank the Moon was wonderful–it's a beautiful tribute to the classics that have come before, as well as being a new and unique take on the fantasy genre that will without a doubt lead to it ranking among the frontrunners of the genre.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Maya Aziz is torn between futures: the one her parents expect for their good Indian daughter (i.e.; staying nearby in Chicago and being matched with a "suitable" Muslim boy), and the one where she goes to film school in New York City--and maybe, just maybe, kisses a guy she's only known from afar. There's the also the fun stuff, like laughing with her best friend Violet, making on-the-spot documentaries, sneaking away for private swimming lessons at a secret pond in the woods. But her world is shattered when a suicide bomber strikes in the American heartland; by chance, he shares Maya's last name. What happens to the one Muslim family in town when their community is suddenly consumed with hatred and fear?

Thought that this title would be pretty relevant considering all that's been going on <strike>this week</strike> <strike>the past few months</strike> throughout history. As an Indian Muslim, even though I haven't grown up in the US, this is such an important book. A little personal input from me: I've never actually been afraid of being called out or hated on because of my race and religion until I went to the US for university. Seriously. It hasn't ever happened, thankfully, but I haven't been back to Trump Presidency-era America, so going back after being 9 months away due to study abroad and summer holidays is going to be a different experience...one that hopefully involves positive change (#resist). That being said, I can't wait to read this one, because now more than ever this is something we–the Muslim community, POC, etc.–need.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">After my slightly mixed reaction when I re-read Shatter Me, but also my thankfully super positive, renewed-faith-for-me reception of Destroy Me, I was looking forward to reading Unravel Me, but I didn't know what to expect. I'm happy though, because this series seriously just keeps getting better. Some of the things that annoyed me in the first book are still there, sure, but man–I can't WAIT to find out how this originally-a-trilogy-and-now-something-more? will end.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Compared to the last book, there was definitely a bit more world building present in Unravel Me. I managed to get a better grasp of the world that Juliette and the rest of the characters live in, especially since they visit more of the Sector they live in. The writing was also a lot better this time round, for me. It was pretty flowery in the last book, and there was still evidence of that in this one, but it was a lot more tampered down. Tahereh Mafi is wonderful with words, but as I mentioned in my review of Shatter Me, it was overpowering at times it didn't need to be. After reading Destroy Me, I was completely taken away though. Speaking of... <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Destroy Me<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> continues into this novel! There's a part maybe a quarter or so into the book that picks up where the novella ends. Good thing too, because WARNER.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Ah yes, my friends, I am absolutely all aboard the Warner train. I was taken by him during <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Destroy Me<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> for sure,<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> but this book kinda sealed it because DAMN DOES IT GET STEAMY. That, and Juliette's character annoyed the shizz out of me, and unfortunately so did Adam. Oh Adam. I loved him in the first book, but in this one both Juliette and Adam were lovesick saps that didn't care about anything. It was just so aggravating to see them run around in circles after each other, hooking up and then breaking up for the same reason every time. So yeah, Warner was a welcome character, but of course, no one can EVER beat my all-time fave, Kenji. Kenji basically voiced my thoughts about Juliette at one point–

<span style="font-family: "georgia"; font-size: 16px;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia"; font-size: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">❝<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">"And I'm sick of you being so caught up in your own little world all the time. You act like this whole thing––everything we do––is a joke. You don't take of it seriously––"
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> "What?" I cut him off. "That's not true––I do take this seriously––"
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> "Bullshit." He laughs a short, sharp, angry laugh. "All you do is sit around and think about your feelings. You've got problems. Boo-freaking-hoo," he says. [...] "And I'd really appreciate it if you'd grow the hell up and stop walking around like the world crapped on your only roll of toilet paper. Because it's stupid," he says. "It's stupid, and it's ungrateful. You don't have a clue what everyone else in the world is going through right now. You don't have a clue, Juliette. And you don't seem to give a damn, either."❞

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">–p. 146, paperback

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">PREACH, KENJI. I may not agree whole-heartedly on the attack on having feelings bit, but moping around as if your problems are the worst thing ever is just a big nope. So YES to this entire rant, and here's to hoping that she finally grows a spine or something. And some control over her capricious mindset because damn–does the girl flip-flop between Adam and Warner. I have a feeling she does get better though, since everyone's told me that book three she's not as annoying, and by the end of Unravel Me she definitely seemed to be more badass and get better, so I'm just praying that it all pays off in the next book.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I'm super excited about finishing this series–well, the first three books, because I'm unsure how the next three books are connected to this one–because despite all the problems I've had with this series, I'm glad I'm finally getting around to reading it. I now see what I've been missing out on (a hell of a lot of steamy scenes, by the look of it), and I'm all in to see how it plays out. Unravel Me thankfully didn't fall under second-book syndrome and a lot actually happened in this sequel to Shatter Me. Things are about to heat up–in more than one way–and I can't wait to pick up Ignite Me.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Hello everyone!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It's summer 2017, and that means...
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">THE RETURN OF THE BOOKS BOX SALE*!!!!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-small;">*previously called the Warehouse sale.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-small;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This sale is absolutely amazing because there are so many categories and so many genres of books available for a pretty good price! I went last year and the year before that, so I knew that I would be in for a treat this time round too. I got the wonderful opportunity to be invited to the media preview again, so I can tell you: no disappointments here, for sure.

<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">This is just the YA section of the sale, folks. Yeah–it's HUGE.

<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">I spotted so many amazing titles–my TBR pile is crying, but I'm a very, VERY happy Rabiah.
<i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">The Raven King <span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">was one of the titles I picked up. There were several titles from Simon & Schuster, Electric Monkey, Candlewick, and several other major publishers!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">As I mentioned, there are several other categories of books at the sale. Look at this mouth-watering array of cookbooks!
<span style="color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Okay, so NOW I get the whole Team Warner thing. Not completely on board over here, but my goodness does a novella in his perspective make me more sympathetic towards him. I'm still a little meh with the idea of novellas, because while it's nice to read the extra bits part of the story, because if you miss out on reading them you sort of miss out on part of the story. Anyway, it was short, and I thought pretty important to the plot.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I remember some review mentioning that this book shifted them to Team Warner (or at least was a cause of that change), so I knew that it was crucial to read this one. I do like that the book was from his point of view. We learn so much more about some of the events that took place in Shatter Me from his perspective, and from that it humanises him a more than just a little bit. We also get introduced to his father, who makes Warner in Shatter Me look like a puppy.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I'm definitely more pumped to read the second book after reading Destroy Me, because I'm curious to see how it all turns out with this complicated antagonistic figure and his feelings towards Juliette.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Before I begin, can I just say how glad I am they changed the cover? I love a good dress on a cover, don't get me wrong, but the new series covers are BEAUTIFUL. Also, I just think that this one in general didn't fit the entire vibe of the book, so yay for actual good cover changes in a series. Anyway, I read this one a super long time ago because my amazing friend gave it to me for my birthday, and while I didn't write a review on it, I'm kind of guessing that I enjoyed it because of the 5-star rating I gave it on Goodreads. I never actually continued with the series, and in a desperate attempt to avoid spoilers FOR LIFE, I'm actually trying to get through series that I've neglected over time. Well, it's the same case as was my re-read of Fallen–I understand why I loved it so much back then, but now I have some problems with the book. Doesn't mean I didn't hate it! I enjoyed a lot of the story, but there were just a few issues I had with the book here and there.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Okay, so I'm kind of half-and-half on the writing. On one hand, it's beautiful. I love the descriptions, because sometimes they're really something else. However, flowery language shouldn't be confused for good language. I feel like a lot of it was overdone and overly descriptive when it didn't need to be. With emotions, sure. But for every single movement? Not necessary. I didn't really need to know how every action that Adam made affected Juliette. It was also kind of repetitive, which was kind of annoying, so I'm hoping that the rest of the series sorts that out. I did like the style of writing though, with the crossed out parts–it made reading Shatter Me a different experience.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">As for the characters, I can't say that I have any complaints. Other than the slightly irritating voice of Juliette through the descriptions, I think they all were pretty solid. I liked Juliette, I liked Adam, I loved to hate Warner (I've heard whispers of spoilers of him later in the series, so I'm curious to see how it all plays out), so it was pretty good all around. I LOVED Kenji though, I gotta say. I love a hilarious character in the midst of a serious situation, and I remember loving him the first time I read this book, too.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">What I missed in this book, however, was the world building. Like, what even happened to this world? On one hand, the mystery sort of adds to it, but when the characters are sort of running around here and there, it's like um–what does this scene even look like? How's the state of everything on the outside??? World-building is definitely a must for dystopian books because they distort the reality we live in to present potential problems, so give us a visible setting to visualise it clearly please!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">All in all, I'm super excited to continue on with the series. I finally get to see what all the hype was about, and finish one of the big, blockbuster series that EVERYONE used to talk about. Shatter Me, despite my thoughts on the writing and somewhat lack of world building, is a promising start to a series, and I know I'm in for an emotional and thrilling ride.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell forged permission slips and cover stories to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts Liars, Inc. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I really enjoyed reading The Art of Lainey by Paula Stokes (read my review), and while Liars, Inc. was by no means a cute romantic comedy, I'm a sucker for psychological thrillers, so I was ALL IN. Of course, anything with with words like lying or liars or never comes home is an immediate DING DING DING in my head, so when I finally decided to pick this one up–as part of my scheme to try to read older books for review–thankfully I was not disappointed.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It's difficult to execute a plot that has a plausible twist that still manages to shock people. The downfall of psychological thrillers or ANY kind of thriller is that the ending falls flat. That just ruins the entire story for people, and it's not hard to see why. This mystery had me guessing till the very end. I was absolutely blown away by that climax, because even though I generally have had a good record with predicting the ends of mysteries, I only managed to piece together a small part of what actually turns out to be the truth. Say what you want about the characters–the plot is very well put together.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Speaking of the characters, they're part of the same category that I find most characters in thrillers fall into–I didn't like them. Not a bad thing with thrillers, considering how you don't know how it plays out until the very end and you can't like certain characters in fear that they might be behind it all. I liked Max well enough, but Preston and Parvati were kind of meh. Meh as in they were alright, but they weren't amazing. I enjoyed the interactions with Max's family though–those moments were really cute and humanised Max's characters, which is probably why he was the best character out of the three of them.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Liars, Inc. presents a deadly mystery that becomes more complex as the plot thickens, and concludes in an ending that blew me away. I was delightfully surprised by how gripping this novel was, and by how much I needed to know how it all ended. Paula Stokes's certainly has a knack for writing in a variety of genres, and I'm looking forward to reading more from her.

<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Before I got around to reading it, I thought <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Show Stopper<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> sounded quite a bit like <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">The Hunger Games<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">.<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;"> They both have the same idea of the rich upper-class watching the bloody sport and torment of the lower classes for entertainment. I couldn't wait to get to this one for that reason, as well as the fact that the tagline "the deadliest show on earth" sounds so ominous, so I knew I was in for a high-stakes read. My goodness, this one was PHENOMENAL. The plot was fast-paced, and every moment had me on the edge of my seat.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The story's content, despite the fantasy setting, was so true in depiction with regards to the attitude towards minorities, known as "Dregs" in this book. Barker clearly reflected today's mentality that unfortunately more than a few people have towards minorities, particularly in the western world. While I wish there was slightly more world-building–because I'm still a little clueless as to HOW different the world in Show Stopper is in comparison to our world today–the plot was packed enough to satisfy my appetite for this dystopian-esque world.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The characters were amazing; I enjoyed the dual-perspective narrative. Ben's storyline was pretty interesting, but Hoshiko's point of view is where it's truly at. It was quite harrowing to learn about her past, as well as the torture and torment she and the other performers go through on a daily basis. The only part I didn't really enjoy was the romance. It was slightly too insta-lovey for me. Like, if their romance had time to develop, then sure, it would make sense. However, Hoshiko basically goes from hating him to having conflicting feelings about him to loving him just like that.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When I got to the end of the book, it sounded like there might be a sequel. I guess it could work as a standalone, but how things ended left me wanting more. Nonetheless, Show Stopper was both terrifying and mesmerising–dark, lush and grim, this one had me flipping pages like mad. A sensational and allegorical narrative that mirrors attitudes in our world today, Hayley Barker's debut is one not to miss.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Adam Higgs is a loser, and he’s not okay with it.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">But starting as a junior in a new high school seems like exactly the right time to change things. He brainstorms with his best friend, Brian: What will it take for him to take over Nixon Collegiate?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Adam searches for the A-listers’ weak spot and strikes gold when he gets queen bee Sara Bryant to pay him for doing her physics homework. One part nerd, two parts badass, Adam ditches his legit job and turns to full-time cheating. His clients? All the Nixon Collegiate gods and goddesses.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">But soon his homework business becomes a booze business, which becomes a fake ID business. Adam’s popularity soars as he unlocks high school achievements left and right, from his first kiss to his first rebound hookup. But something else is haunting him—a dark memory from his past, driving him to keep climbing. What is it? And will he go too far?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Looking at the cover and title, I first had How to Win at High School pegged as a light-hearted story about someone trying to climb the high school social ladder. Boy was I wrong. Social climbing? Yes. Light-hearted? Nope. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I haven't actually seen <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">Scarface<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">–t<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">he book kind of explains the plot, which was helpful, because all I had to go on beforehand was "say hello to my little friend"–and referencing the movie sets this story up to have foreboding undertones. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Owen Matthews's novel is a gripping tribute to the quest for popularity, one that's full of harsh realities and dark turns.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">First of all, I loved the format. I was more than a little surprised when I saw that there were more than 300 chapters, but upon reading it I found that most chapters were only one or two pages, some even just a sentence or a few sentences long. It definitely made for a quick read! And then there's the pretty unique writing style. It kind of reminded me of books written in free verse, with the purposeful line-spacing and use of parenthesis. It also flowed like a stream of consciousness narrative, which I thought was quite cool, because despite how fast I was able to read this book, I was still able to gage the depth of the situation and understand our main character.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I hated Adam, but I don't think that's much of a surprise. I suppose we are meant to hate him, as he starts to become absolved and obsessed with reaching to the top. Also, I can't believe a high school could be like this! Surely, someone would catch on. It seems unlikely that it could get this far without someone taking notice. Besides my suspension of disbelief, this whole world seemed too far from the reality of high school, which in a way kept me reading because I wanted to know how it would all go down.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A much darker take on the usual climb for popularity story, How to Win at High School was a gritty tribute to Scarface skilfully adapted for a young adult audience. With a unique writing style and convoluted characters you don't know whether to hate or support, I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from Owen Matthews.
<span style="color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">After crashing hundreds of miles from civilisation in the Amazon rainforest, Fred, Con, Lila and Max are utterly alone and in grave danger. They have no food, no water and no chance of being rescued. But they are alive and they have hope. As they negotiate the wild jungle they begin to find signs that something - someone - has been there before them. Could there possibly be a way out after all?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I've always had Katherine Rundell's books on my to-read list, so when I got the chance to review her upcoming book, I jumped at the opportunity. I mean, it sounded like the sort of book I loved reading when I was younger, and it had some major Hatchet vibes to it (throwback to those primary school days!). However, what intrigued me most of all, other than the need to know how this group of kids will survive, was the setting. How often is it that we see a book that isn't a fantasy/sci-fi that takes place somewhere else other than the US or the UK or Europe? The answer, my dear friends, is that yes, there are books out there, but the numbers are very very small in comparison to the mainstream settings that a lot of middle grade and young adult stories take place in. This one though? THE AMAZON. THE FLIPPING AMAZON JUNGLE, YOU GUYS. Count me in for this adventure!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I loved the varying personalities of the children. Fred seemed to be the main character, the narration primarily focusing on his thoughts and feelings, but the other three characters also definitely got close to equal page time too. I loved Max, even though I'm sure he would annoy me endlessly if I was ever stuck in the jungle with him–or give me a heart attack for that matter with the amount of times he disobeys his sister or disappears–but he was still an adorable 5-year old with some hilarious lines. Lila was such a sweet character, I totally identified with her, also being the oldest sibling and constantly having to chastise and make sure that people stay in order. And despite the rather chilly beginning, Con's character really grew on me. I loved her sarcasm; it added to the humour in an otherwise serious situation. Fred's character, while he definitely had an interesting emotional backstory, did some pretty stupid reckless things. Still, though–it makes for an good story.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The only problem I had was this book had more to do with the ARC rather than the actual book. THERE WAS NO ARTWORK!!! I absolutely adore artwork in books, and what makes me really happy about middle grade books is the fact that many of them feature artwork that intertwines with the written narrative. However, much to my disdain, there wasn't any in the proof copy. If the cover is any indication though, I'm sure the illustrations in the final book are going to be gorgeous.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">An enjoyable survival adventure with more than a few shiver-inducing twists, The Explorer fits in with the likes of notable children's classics. Katherine Rundell's storytelling abilities will captivate readers of all ages, hooking them in from start to finish. Don't miss out on this one–it's gripping, it's terrific, and it's magical.
