An action-packed, blood-soaked, futuristic debut thriller set in a world where the murder rate is higher than the birthrate. For fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series, La Femme Nikita, and the movie Hanna.
Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision.
The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family?
Action-packed, blood-soaked, and chilling, this is a dark and compelling debut novel by Lindsay Cummings.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages now and was lucky enough to have the opportunity to read it through Edelweiss for the blog tour. I’ve known about Lindsay and her blog before she wrote this book, and when she announced that she got a publishing deal for this amazing story, I was overjoyed. Of course, cover releases and more about the plot was revealed and by the time I started this book, I already knew it was going to be a fantastic ride. The Murder Complex is a dystopian, and going into it I was afraid of the several clichés that could come up, but it was such an original concept, even though placed in a world that has been visited several times, that I was hooked from start to finish.
I liked the dual narrative – the shift in perspective from Meadow’s character to Zephyr’s really allowed me as a reader to get a grasp on the world Cummings has built. It really illuminated the different groups or sections within this society as well as the how the area is built up. The writing is absolutely stunning and I was able to clearly imagine what this world and it’s characters looked like. I liked Meadow and Zephyr’s characters as we got to see their internal conflicts as well as their own experience in this world, both longing for a better life. Meadow’s character I felt was more of the protagonist than Zephyr's was, but nonetheless, we definitely see both of their stories and backgrounds in very good detail.
I really loved the plot and build up in this novel. It started it steady and then zoomed into full-blown action. I liked the different characters we see along the way, and it becomes difficult to know who to trust. There are several plot twists, some that I did see coming from a mile away, and some which were just quite out of the blue that made my heart race and eyes widen. There was so much depth to this novel, as we get to see some of it’s history and how the Initiative came to be, and unlike several dystopian novels where the novel spits out a bunch of facts that the reader just can’t keep up with, Cumming’s novel was easy to follow and more enjoyable because of that.
The Murder Complex left me hungry for more, because I’m dying to know what happens next. A deadly world and a swoon-worthy romance, Cummings’ debut is a fast-paced thriller bound to leave you panting and excited for more. Can’t wait for the sequel!
