Briana Fox is the wildest girl in school. She and Kyle have been friends for a long time..., almost lovers. When Briana challenges Kyle to a swim across the lake, she's injured in a terrible accident, but also discovers a mysterious substance in an underwater cave. What seems to be a magical yet harmless "power drug" turns out to have unexpected properties. Briana soon becomes dependent on it for her very survival. When two government agents get wind of their discovery, they will stop at nothing to force Kyle and Briana to reveal its source.
Though written for teenagers, readers of all ages will enjoy this fast-paced, moving story.
Wild Child is a short Sci-Fi/Fantasy story (around 100 book pages) but it's SO original! I mean, the whole concept, of finding the new substance, it's properties so different from anything else, and then the ending which really shocked me, is all new different material. I think that even though it's a lot to take in, it was well told and every detail was fit in without seeming rushed.
There wasn't too much of description for the characters, but the cover really does show somewhat the effects of the green liquid on "Brie" or Brianna. The greenish tinge on her skin is quite creepy, but I really do think the cover captures her perfectly. In the background we have Kyle, her friend (slowly becoming lover through the course of the story) and he doesn't really know what to make of the liquid. He's the more cautionary one, and Brie is the dare devil. I love this contrast and it really does add up to everything in the book.
The Mysterious Green Substance sounds like a drug, and although it's never really found out, it's effects on Brie are quite...startling. It changes her, just like a drug does, but has more supernatural stuff acting out on her...you'll have to read to find out more!
The ending of the story was just...WOW. I got so surprised– I didn't even see it coming! It was a good ending though, a different way to end the story. You don't really know what's going to happen next, but that's great, because then you can always think of different possibilities. Very unexpected, and brilliantly told.
Wild Child is a quick read with a big impact. It's different, unique and simple, yet complex and has a deeper meaning to it. I think that though it's aimed for YA, readers young and old will enjoy the short story line and the cliffhanger at the end. I've also just heard that a sequel to the book will be released! I can't wait...I need to find out what happens after!
