When Chalice sets off for Branbury in the middle of the night with her grandfather's instructions, she has no idea of the dangers that await her. The King's men have destroyed her home village of Canton and she is suddenly thrown into a Terravailian world that she does not know. Lost and alone, she is hard pressed to evade the iron grasp of the madman who rules the land. With the help of a friendly Chinuk, an old man, and a book that she discovers along the way, not only does she find true friends and true love, but she also finds her true self and what it means to be the Raie'Chaelia.
This was SUCH an epic fantasy. I haven't read fantasies for a while, and I'm glad to come back to them. I was taken to the worlds of the author's imagination and I felt that same "childhood" feeling I've felt while reading countless fantasy books, such as C.S. Lewis' and J.R.R. Tolkein.
This story was so original! Loved everything about it. I fell in love with the characters, the setting was INCREDIBLE, and the background story was so magical. You immediately get pulled in by the mystery and the curious feeling you get that there's more to this story...

I liked Chalice's character. She's brave, daring and totally independent. She also has the cutest and most adorabl-est horse ever! :D I also liked the fact that she cares about others, and doesn't put anyone in harm. Love that about her.
O.EM.GEE. New book crush! Jeremiah? What can I say. Fell in love the moment she attacks him (yeah, that was interesting...) but yeah, he made this book much more...romantic and love how much he cares about, well, everything.
Bunejab is SO CUTE. Okay, the first time Chalice meets him, I felt like gushing how adorable he is! He's like this furry animal...I thought he kinda reminded me of a large possum! But I don't know, that just how I imagined him.
I like all the minor characters, and even the evil ones were described very well. Love the fact that when everything seems to be going smoothly, one of the "bad side" jump in. Just makes the story a whole lot more interesting.

I really loved how Douthit described the scenery. I could imagine myself in the "ghost town" which Chalice travels to first, or the Chinuk village that they stay in overnight. Love the detail, you can really feel apart of the journey which Chalice and her friends take.
What I didn't like, however, was the fact that small things were described too much. Like what Chalice changed into after the bath. I didn't really want to know what she was wearing to bed or what she changes into when waking up. I just thought it was a little unnecessary.

Overall, The Raie'Chaelia is an amazing journey of which one girl, with the help of her friends, finds out about her past. The ending, was AMAZING. God, I really want to find out more now! That was such a big cliffhanger. The Firelight of Maalda, the second book, will be coming out in maybe around October 2011. Can't wait!
