Waiting on Wednesday – Week 63

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It's to spotlight on upcoming reads which I'm DYING to get my hands on.

This week's WoW is:
The Diviners by Libba Bray

Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult--also known as "The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies."
When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer--if he doesn't catch her first.

Goodreads ◆ September 18, 2012

I LOVE Libba Bray's books, even though I've only read The Gemma Doyle Trilogy. I have yet to read Going Bovine and Beauty Queens. Honestly, I think her books are the most original yet :) Anyway, can't wait for this one, it sounds fabulous!

What are you waiting on?

Dream Cast: A Great and Terrible Beauty

I started thinking about who could play what in YA books if it were adapted to a movie, and THUS, I wanna start making "dream cast" posts. So... this is gonna be fun.

Today's movie dream cast is for:

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

Gemma

Emma Stone
(Easy A, The Help)

I absolutely adore Stone, and even though I've only seen her in Easy A, I found her hilariously refreshing. Gemma in the book has somewhat a funny side, so it would be good to see Stone perform comically in the movie time to time. Plus, Gemma has green eyes, and they look absolutely stunning on Emma Stone in the right photo!

OR

Candice Accola
(The Vampire Diaries [TV], Juno)

I believe she's a natural blonde, but she's just as gorgeous as a red-head. I would say she would fit the part more than Stone, passing off more as British. It's a tough decision though!

Felicity

Ashley Benson
(Pretty Little Liars [TV])

When I thought of who could play Felicity, the only person coming to mind was Ashley Benson, and I agree completely hands down. I don't know if anyone else could really fit the part, but she's got that seducing look that Felicity's supposed to have, that eye-balling stare...

Pippa

Anna Popplewell
(The Chronicles of Narnia)

She's so effing PRETTY! Pippa's supposed to be the beauty of the group, and I definitely thing Popplewell could do it fabulously.

OR

Leighton Meester
(Gossip Girl [TV], Monte Carlo)

AHHH! She looks the part in this photo already :D Love her so much on GG, so I couldn't help but picture her as Pippa.

Ann

Molly Quinn
(Castle [TV], Avalon High)

Ann is supposed to be plain and almost dull of sort, and Quinn is anything but. However, I just couldn't help but picture Ann and her. She's got that natural beauty, simple and not-overly obvious. That's why I think her ideal.

Kartik

This one was a toughie, I had to admit. I can't think of anyone (any teen Indian actors) and so this was the closest I could come up with:

Avan Jogia
(Victorious [TV])

...well, he's somewhat half-Indian, and maybe in a couple years or so, he would become the more ideal Kartik.

Hester Asa Moore / Sarah Rees-Toome / Circe

Michelle Pfeiffer
(Stardust, A Midsummer Night's Dream, I Am Sam, etc.)

After seeing her in Stardust as a witch, I don't think I could portray her anything less than fantasy. She's got that mythical look, like she could be a sorceress, or a witch, or a spellcaster of some sort...and yet, a teacher at a boarding school. Perfect for the part!

Well, that was my casting for A Great and Terrible Beauty. It was originally to become a movie, but unfortunately, they stopped production :( sad, because I think this is seriously amazing movie material. Anyway, who would you cast for this book? and,

which book should I cast next week?

Cover Love - Week 6

"Cover Love" is a weekly meme that I've adapted from 21 Pages. This week's Cover Loves is: Books with Redheads. I started looking at my desktop background (which is the title above!) and I started to see a whole bunch of books with models with red hair!

The first one up is the book series which caught my attention, The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray. (sorry it's out the series order!)

The next one is a stunning cover, Firelight by Sophie Jordan.

I haven't read the series yet, but I really plan too! The A-List by Zoey Dean (and a really bright cover at that too!).

This series I adore! Cassandra Clare's fantabulous series, The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes and the soon-to-be-released, City of Fallen Angels.

I Haven't read this series yet, but I do plan to! Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston. (again, sorry that it's out of series order!)

...and the last book, which was just recently released, Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton.

well, that's all for this week's Cover Love! Which books have you seen with Redheads on it? Leave a link/comment to your own Cover Love!

Cover Love - Week 4

"Cover Love" is an amazing meme I've adapted from 21 Pages. This week's Cover Love is: Books where the Person has their back to the reader. It's an interesting one, and one that I've never considered. I found this amazing list on Goodreads.

Okay, so for the first one I found this one, which I've never really actually considered. A Great and Terrible Beauty and from the same series, The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray.

And then here, from the fabulous Vamp series, House of Night, is the books Betrayed and Untamed by PC and Kristin Cast.

and then here's one of the most amazing Meg Cabot books ever (well, love the guy!) and here's Jinx!

and here's a book I've never read before, but sounds AMAZING. The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams.

Here's two series (two and a half) with Nobody's Princess and Nobody's Prize (from the Nobody's series) and Sphinx's Princess by Esther Friesner.

well, that's it for this week's Cover Love! Leave a link in the comments to your Cover Love post, or post a comment with some titles that you know that have the theme of this week's Cover Love!

The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray

IT HAS BEEN A YEAR OF CHANGE since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Her mother murdered, her father a laudanum addict, Gemma has relied on an unsuspected strength and has discovered an ability to travel to an enchanted world called the realms, where dark magic runs wild. Despite certain peril, Gemma has bound the magic to herself and forged unlikely new alliances. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test these bonds.

The Order - the mysterious group her mother was once part of - is grappling for control of the realms, as is the Rakshana. Spence's burned East Wing is being rebuilt, but why now? Gemma and her friends see Pippa, but she is not the same. And their friendship faces its gravest trial as Gemma must decide once and for all what role she is meant for.

I think I loved this book even more the second time.

I guess that may be because I was only 12 (wow, a 2 whole years ago ;P) when I read this book, and I might not have understood what they were saying etc. Well, a lot has changed in those two years. I loved this book, understood the non-understandable and made it through all 800+ pages.

I found this a very dramatic, amazing, and saddening conclusion to the Gemma Doyle trilogy. Everything comes together in this book, secrets are found out, not only of the Order, but of Gemma and her friends and family as well. It almost is too much to take in at one point with *SPOILER ALERT* a betrayal of one who was thought to be innocent, Felicity's secret and Pippa's main goal. It's frightening...but I loved every second of it.

I read the first book without much knowledge of it. I though, this looks like an amazing Classic looking book...and it turned out to be fantasy. Which worked out in my favor in the end, because I really love fantasy, and I've never read a book which combines a Classic (well, modern-author telling a story from the 1800's), and Dark, Gruesome Fantasy. The fantasy in this book is a whole lot different from other books, as it combines different elements from Mythology, such as the Gorgon, the Fates etc. and puts it all together. All Fantasy creatures in this book are also evil, which makes it much darker, mysterious and creepier than ever. Loved it. Every. Single. Bit. Have I mentioned that before? It's just so good, that I felt like it was worth saying it another time.

In this book, Gemma doesn't know who to trust. The one she loves betrays her, her friends end up having a fight with her, and she suddenly feels very alone...and very threatened. Her family's being threatened unless she does what they tell her to do, the Forest Folk suddenly start a war with the Untouchables and everything keeps falling apart. Creatures who seem innocent at first aren't at all what they seem to be on the inside...

Gemma's character however is an amazing one. I love her humor and sarcasm, and yet her headstong-ness and ability to not let her friends down. She senses when things go wrong or something is amiss. With her amazing powers she also manages to help her friends and also gain the information she needs. An amazing heroine, I think she's also as strong as some other fictional characters, such as Katniss from The Hunger Games.

Luvvve Kartik. And it makes it even better that he's Indian ;). *SPOILER ALERT* I don't blame Gemma for falling for him, he's just so irresistable. But it's so sad at the ending...I nearly screamed at the book thinking, WHY? WHY DID THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN? I nearly gave up finishing it to the end the first time I read it (even though there was only around 20-30 or something like that pages to go till the end) I was just that upset. He is just so...like Mr. Darcy almost. Well, you know, an Indian version of him...and part of an ancient brotherhood...and fantasy like things. Well, you get the point.

Overall, I would say that The Sweet Far Thing is a fantastic and amazing (amazingly huge) ending to the Gemma Doyle Trilogy. It's dark secrets and twists are so shocking and unbelievable, it's so good :D.

My Teasers:

"You stole mortals from our world," I say, horrified.
Philon sips from the chalice. "The mortals had a choice. They chose to come with us."
"You enchanted them!"
A smirk pulls at the corners of Philon's thin lips. "They chose to be enchanted."
